Misdemeanor

A misdemeanor is a less serious crime than a felony. A misdemeanor is a crime punishable by less than twelve months in jail. Community service, informal probation, formal probation, fines, and incarceration in a county jail less than twelve months are common penalties for misdemeanor crimes. Misdemeanors do not carry a prison sentence.
