In California, most adults over the age of twenty-one have a right to own and possess a firearm; however, individuals who are convicted of certain offenses, lose the right to own, purchase, or possess a firearm. These offenses include all felonies and specified misdemeanors. There are also other circumstances where a firearm prohibition order may be imposed, such as a person who is addicted to narcotics, mentally incompetent to stand trial, and other circumstances.
